Job Description: 

European ophthalmology society seeks an energetic, innovative freelance editor to direct medical content operations for its 10x/year flagship magazine. Working with the executive editor, a design and production team, the magazine’s editorial board, and a group of freelance writers, you’ll spearhead the publication of approximately 15-20 pieces of content for each issue and ensure the magazine continues to be a must-read for cataract and refractive surgeons and trainees. Approximately 20 hours per week.

Summary of position: Serve as lead for medical research and medical practice content in EuroTimes and ESCRS Today, the magazine and conference newspaper (respectively) of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). Maintain ongoing relationships with EuroTimes Editorial Board and medical editors. Work with freelance writers, executive editor, copyeditor, art director, and magazine designer to ensure publications stay on schedule and questions/concerns are addressed in a timely manner.

 

Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of the ophthalmology industry in Europe, including (but not limited to) medication and equipment suppliers, teaching centers, professional societies, hospitals, patient advocacy organizations, and private practices
  • Interest in issues and developments affecting ophthalmology and the practice of cataract and refractive surgery, including (but not limited to) medical research, regulations, legal mandates, new technologies, managing a surgical practice, the education and professional development of ophthalmologists, and sustainable medical practices
  • Familiarity with leading ophthalmology societies and publications
  • Proficiency in English is a must; other languages are helpful but not necessary
  • Ability to work across time zones (Europe and the United States)
  • Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to direct a team of freelance writers/reporters
  • Ability to attend industry meetings in Europe and United States as needed

 

Job Duties: 

  • Work closely with the EuroTimes medical editors and Editorial Board and the executive editor to identify medical content opportunities for EuroTimes and ESCRS Today
  • Assign articles, departments, and columns to freelance writers or volunteers
  • Review submissions to EuroTimes and ESCRS Today to ensure quality and accuracy of content, appropriateness of imagery, and proper citation of sources
  • Work with writers as needed to facilitate approval of content by presenters/authors/etc.
  • Meet regularly with the executive editor and copyeditor to discuss the status of magazine content and ensure that the publication cycle stays on schedule
  • Develop themes and assign a cover story(ies) for each issue of EuroTimes and share a brief synopsis of the story with magazine staff to facilitate discussion of cover art concepts
  • Liaise with ESCRS sales staff to identify content opportunities of interest to industry suppliers; assign freelance writers as needed for advertising supplements
  • Meet monthly via Microsoft Teams with the medical editors of EuroTimes
  • Attend meetings of the EuroTimes Editorial Board
  • Attend meetings of the ESCRS Publications Committee
  • Develop and manage content schedules for EuroTimes and ESCRS Today
  • Manage the Henahan Writing Prize project, including developing a theme topic and reviewing entries
  • Recruit new medical content writers as needed; review writers’ invoices
  • Be accountable for keeping all milestones achieved according to schedule

 

Location: This is a remote position. Preference will be given to candidates in Europe and North America.

 

Term: This position is for a one-year term beginning 1 January 2026 and ending 31 December 2026. It may be extended for an additional year on the agreement of both parties.
